One minute drills...
I was watching this video of Kron talking about his famous match with Garry "the lion killer" Tonon the other day and at the end he mentions the 1 minute drills he was doing in preparation for ADCC.
These 1 minute drills that gave him the confidence to know with 1 minute left and down on points he could still win the match.
We used to do these drills all the time leading up to competition because Rickson would always mention, when you compete not only are you fighting your opponent but you're also fighting the clock.
It doesn't matter if you have the lead the whole match or your opponent has the lead the whole match, what matters is who's winning when the clock stops.
So we would set up these scenarios where we'd be in a bad position like under the mount or cross side or have someone in the guard and we'd be down 2, 3 or 4 points and we had a minute to win.
This would force us to figure out how to to score the necessary points or to finish.
Of course, for Rickson, the emphasis was always on finishing the fight.
My dear friend Gumby from On The Mat posted this video the other day of me competing back as a brown or purple belt.
You can hear Rickson coaching me. Towards the end of the match I ask them the time and you can hear them call out "ONE MINUTE!!!"
That means it's GO TIME!
Shortly after I catch my opponent in my cross collar choke armbar combo which I teach in my closed guard attacks course.
This combo is extremely difficult to stop because in order to defend one you have to give the other.
Anyways if you want to check out more Old School footage or support Gumby, check out his site here:
