Hey,
Let's face it. Jiu Jitsu is addictive. When you get the bug you get it bad.
So of course training was by far my number one priority when I got to L.A. After all I left everything behind and moved all the way from Oklahoma to dedicate myself to learning the Martial Art of Jiu-Jitsu.
I was LIVING MY DREAM, Training with the master and LOVING it all. But we all got to eat, a lot when you are training twice a day 6 days a week.
So even when you are living the dream you have to work. I set out to find a job that wouldn’t interfere with my training.
Little did I know...
What I ended up finding was a job where I actually had to use my training nightly. I became a bouncer at The HOLLYWOOD club at the time. Night after night I dealt with Stars, rich guys, paparazzi, all the way down to your drunken party boy who just doesn’t know when to go home.
I didn’t know it at first, but as time went on my JOB became an extension of my training.
Originally I got the club job so I could train all day but soon I realized I needed to train for the job.
Street Defense techniques I was learning in class from everyday from Rickson we were getting put to REAL LIFE tests nightly. Defusing situations from the feet and controlling multiple people was important in a crowed night club.
No way to go to the ground, nor would you even want to.
Fights, and altercations were a nightly routine, then next day in class we’d review them with the man and I’D sharpen my tools. Some nights it felt like it could be life and death out there.
One night at the club it got really UGLY, guys were swinging haymakers everywhere it was pandemonium. The next day at the academy Rickson had me break it down.
And he told me some really important information. And, I'm sharing it here with you.
