How to re-establish the underhook!
Sometimes, something works so well you wonder "what am I going to do when other people catch on and start using this against me?"
Today we explore an example of this from crosside, when you pass someone's guard and they get the underhook.
So how do we apply this concept everywhere?
Remember, the name of the game for Flow with the Go in Thailand is to adapt our Jiu-Jitsu to any situation we find ourselves in.
To do this, we need to ask questions like "why is this working" and "how can I apply this same principle to another technique?
And also, we need to explore where and when we can apply what we know.
So as you practice this technique, imagine all the other places the same principle is at work.
For this particular technique, you are killing your opponent's connection to you by clamping down on their wrist, so the underhook is basically useless, even though it might appear to be there.
You're also creating a connection that serves you, and using your weight along with it to stay glued to your opponent.
And you're also using the proper timing because you're choosing the right time (between bumps) to use your elbow to fight for your underhook.
Now if you take all of these principles and ask yourself the same questions about any technique you're learning, you will watch your skill and understanding skyrocket.
Ask yourself, "what connection does my opponent need to make his technique work from this position?"
Ask yourself, "What connection do I need to make my technique work?"
"How can I kill my opponent's connection and create the one I need?"
"How can I use my weight to make things as hard as possible for them and as easy and relaxed as possible for me?"
And finally, "what is the best time to move the way I want to move for maximum effectiveness? When would it work and when would it not work and why?"
Again, these questions do not take a long time to ask, just a few seconds or minutes of diving into things like this will open up an entire world for you.
Of course, you'll find yourself spending much more time on all of these when you get the hang of it because it's so fun.
But in any case, this is the road to mastery.
And if you want to keep walking down the road to mastery...
