When your fundamentals are solid, it's pretty shocking how bad things can get for you, and yet, you can still be safe.

I'm not sure if you know who Andy Stumpf is, but he's become a good friend of mine.

He also happens to be a Navy SEAL Veteran and is about as tough as they come.

And, while Andy was visiting, I was telling him that if you really understand how the back position works...

95% of the time, you can escape a Rear Naked Choke fully locked in, even with someone squeezing to finish!

He wanted to see for himself, so I let him get hooks in and go for it.

I still think he was being too nice on the first attempt, but on the second attempt you can see I had to really focus to make it work, and it did.

Here are some things to note about this escape:

1. When you're talking about real violence, no matter how bad things seem, if you're awake and breathing it's NEVER TOO LATE so NEVER GIVE UP because you might just need one or two more seconds of effort to be out of the trap.

Giving up mentally happens long before things are truly hopeless a lot of the time, and it's important to train yourself to be focused and persistent as long as you can.

This doesn't necessarily contradict the importance of tapping when you're caught, because...

2. True mastery of a technique or principle means mastering every single detail that makes your techniques work.

You'll notice in this video I'm not trying to do everything at once, even though it happens quickly.

I'm actually focusing on micro goals and achieving each little goal one at a time.

Some of these micro goals involve what I'm doing with my head, some involve my feet and legs, and others involve my hips.

But each one of them is distinct from the others, and you need a clear, in-depth knowledge of each micro goal to make the entire technique work effectively as things change in a fight (and things are ALWAYS changing in a fight).

This will also help you stay relaxed physically and mentally, if you know which micro goals to focus and prioritize, and then focus on achieving them one by one.

Because they're not always going to appear in the same order, or in the same level of intensity, and you'll only be able to improvise and adjust them as necessary if you know them each like the back of your hand.

They have to be second nature.
